How Long Does a Traxxas Battery Last? Run Time and Lifespan
A Traxxas battery typically gives about 10 to 30 minutes of driving per charge. Where in that range depends on the pack’s capacity (mAh), whether it’s NiMH or LiPo, the model and motor (brushed or brushless), gearing, and how hard you drive. Over its life, a LiPo pack usually lasts a few hundred charge cycles and NiMH several hundred, if charged and stored correctly. Bigger capacity means longer runs, but only if it fits the car.

How to estimate it
Run time is roughly the usable capacity divided by the average current. A 5000 mAh pack drawing an average of 20 A lasts about 5000 ÷ 20,000 × 60 ≈ 15 minutes, but average current varies so much with driving that measuring works better: run the car, recharge, and note how many mAh the charger put back. Divide by the minutes you drove to get your average draw. Never run LiPos below the ESC’s low-voltage cutoff to gain minutes.
How to get longer runs
- Use the largest capacity pack that fits the battery tray and the Traxxas connector.
- Gear down (smaller pinion) if the motor gets hot.
- Drive on hard surfaces rather than long grass.
- Keep the drivetrain clean and bearings free.
- Carry two or three packs and rotate them, letting each cool before charging.
- Use Training Mode or reduced throttle for beginners and kids.
How many cycles a pack lasts
With good care, LiPos last a few hundred cycles; NiMH packs can last several hundred. What shortens life: over-discharge, charging while hot, storing fully charged, crashes that dent the pack, and heat in the car. Signs a battery needs replacing
- Run time clearly shorter than when new.
- The car feels slow and the ESC cuts out early.
- LiPo cells out of balance by more than a small amount after charging.

- NiMH packs that won’t take a full charge or get very hot.
Storage
Store LiPos at storage voltage (about 3.8 V per cell) using the charger’s storage mode, in a fireproof bag or box, at room temperature. NiMH packs can be stored partly charged and topped up before use. Don’t leave packs connected to the car when it’s not running, since some ESCs drain them slowly.
NiMH or LiPo?
NiMH packs are tough and simple, and many Traxxas RTRs started with them. LiPos give more punch and longer runs for their weight but need careful charging and storage. If your Traxxas ESC has LiPo cutoff, switching to LiPo is usually the biggest run-time upgrade you can make.
