WLtoys V950 RC Helicopter: Specs, Flying and Spare Parts

RC Helicopters

The WLtoys V950 is a 6-channel flybarless helicopter with a 460 mm main rotor, a 450 mm body and a weight of about 400 g. It uses a brushless 1912 2830 kV main motor, an iron-core 050 tail motor and a 3S 11.1 V 1500 mAh battery, with WLtoys quoting around 15 minutes of flight. Its 3D/6G system switches between a stabilised 6-axis mode for learning and a 3-axis mode for aerobatics. It’s sold ready to fly with transmitter and charger, and spare parts are widely available.

Flight modes

In 6G mode, the helicopter self-levels and limits tilt, so beginners can learn to hover and fly circuits. In 3D mode, the 3-axis gyro allows full aerobatics and inverted flight. Practise in 6G until orientation is second nature, then switch to 3D at a safe height with a plan to switch back.

About the tail motor

Unlike higher-end helicopters with brushless tail motors or belt-driven tails, the V950 uses a brushed iron-core tail motor. It works well but wears over time and is weaker in hard 3D manoeuvres, so tail authority can fade. Many owners keep a spare tail motor. Similar-size helicopters with brushless tails, such as the Eachine E200, are worth comparing.

First flights

  1. Charge the 3S battery with the supplied charger, supervised.
  2. Switch on the transmitter, then connect the battery, keeping the heli still.
  3. Select 6G mode and low rates.
  4. Hover low over grass, tail towards you.
  5. Practise side-on and nose-in hovering before circuits.
  6. Land with the battery warning, not after.

Spare parts

  • Main blades and tail rotor.
  • Main shaft and feathering shaft.
  • Tail motor and tail boom.
  • Servos and ball links.
  • Extra 3S batteries.

Who it suits

The V950 suits pilots who want an affordable, larger-than-micro collective-pitch helicopter with stabilisation, for outdoor flying in light wind. It’s bigger and more stable than micro helis, and cheaper than hobby-brand 450s. Comparisons are in best RC helicopters for adults.

Maintenance

After every few flights, check the main blade grips for play, look for cracks in the blades and tail rotor, and make sure the canopy mounts and landing gear are secure. Listen for changes in sound, which often point to a worn tail motor or loose part. After a crash, check the main shaft for bends by spinning the head and watching for wobble, and replace any bent shafts rather than straightening them. A little maintenance keeps a budget helicopter flying smoothly for a long time.

Flying outdoors

The V950’s size makes it more stable outdoors than micro helicopters, but it’s still light. Fly in light wind only, keep it upwind of you, and stay at a comfortable height where you can see its orientation clearly.

Buy two or three extra batteries: with about 15 minutes per pack claimed, a few packs make a full afternoon of practice, and rotating them lets each cool before charging.

Practising on a simulator between sessions speeds up learning a lot.
