Best 1/10 RC Rally Cars: What to Look For and Models to Consider

RC Cars

A 1/10 RC rally car is a four-wheel-drive car with a licensed road-car body, medium ground clearance, long-travel suspension and gravel tyres, built to slide on dirt, gravel and tarmac. The most widely available ready-to-run example is the Traxxas Ford Fiesta ST Rally, sold as the BL-2s (brushless, 2S) and the faster VXL (3S, Traxxas quotes 60+ mph with optional gearing). The HPI WR8 Flux, a 1/8 rally car, is a larger alternative. Look for AWD, brushless power, waterproof electronics, a stability system and good parts support.

What makes a rally car

A rally car sits between a touring car and a short-course truck. It needs enough ground clearance and suspension travel for gravel and bumps, but a low enough centre of gravity to slide through corners without rolling. Four-wheel drive gives traction on loose surfaces. Treaded gravel tyres grip dirt and still work on tarmac. The body is usually a licensed replica of a real rally car, often with clipless mounting.

What to look for

  • 4WD/AWD with sealed diffs.
  • Brushless power for speed, or brushed for a gentler start.
  • Waterproof electronics for wet gravel and puddles.
  • Stability control (e.g. Traxxas TSM) to help on loose surfaces.
  • Good parts availability locally.
  • Durable body mounting and spare bodies.

Speed and gearing

Rally cars are fast on smooth surfaces but most fun at speeds you can control on loose ground. The VXL’s top speed needs optional gearing and smooth tarmac; on gravel, a lower gear gives better acceleration and cooler running. Use 2S at first and step up when you’re comfortable. Fast cars in general are in fast RC cars.

Where to drive

Gravel car parks, dirt paths, packed sand and empty tracks suit rally cars. Avoid deep sand and tall grass, which suit monster trucks better. Build a small course with cones to practise slides and hairpins. Respect other people and private property.

Simple tuning

  1. Adjust shock preload for ride height on rough ground.
  2. Change tyre types for tarmac vs gravel.
  3. Adjust diff oil for more or less sliding.
  4. Lower the gearing for loose surfaces.
  5. Turn stability control down as your driving improves.

Rally car vs short-course truck

Short-course trucks have more ground clearance and protective bodies, so they handle rougher ground and jumps. Rally cars are lower, more precise and more realistic looking. If you’ll drive on smooth dirt and gravel, a rally car is more rewarding; on rough terrain, a short-course truck is tougher. Other 1/10 types are compared in best 1/10 scale RC cars, and the larger WR8 is covered in HPI WR8 Flux.

Care

After driving in dust or water, clean the car, dry the bearings, check screws and look for wear on drive shafts and suspension arms. Rally cars slide a lot, so tyres wear quickly; keep spares. Charging and battery care are explained in how long to charge an RC car battery.

Budget

Brushed rally cars cost least and suit younger drivers; brushless versions add speed and cost more, plus batteries and a charger if not included. Factor in spare tyres, bodies and wear parts.
