The World’s Largest RC Boat: Record Models and Giant Builds
One officially recognised giant is the largest remote-controlled model aircraft carrier: 5.02 m (16.46 ft) long, built by YouTuber James Whomsley and recognised by Guinness World Records on Rudyard Lake, UK, on 15 October 2023, where an RC plane was landed on its deck. Other enormous RC boats exist as private builds, from large scale warships to high-speed electric offshore boats over 2 m long. Guinness also recognises distance records, such as a 2 m RC yacht that sailed 85.128 nautical miles from Italy to Corsica in under 24 hours in 2004.

The aircraft carrier
The 5 m carrier was built to do something no RC boat had done before at that scale: let an RC plane land on its deck. Building it involved a large hull, a flight deck long enough for a small plane, electric propulsion and careful ballast. The record attempt showed how far hobby builders can push RC models when combining boats and planes.
Other giant RC boats
- Large scale warships: battleships and cruisers several metres long, often built by clubs over years.
- Giant offshore racers: such as the 2.33 m twin-brushless Outerlimits HPR 233.
- Big sailing yachts: scale schooners and racing yachts over 2 m.
- Working models: large tugs and fireboats with working pumps and lights.
What it takes to build big
- A workshop and transport plan; big hulls need trailers.
- Strong hull construction (fibreglass, plywood or composite).
- Reliable power and redundant radio systems.
- Ballast and stability calculations.
- Access to suitable water and permission to launch.
- Helpers for launching and recovery.
Big boats you can buy
Commercial large boats top out around 1–1.5 m for racing cats and gas boats, and up to 2 m or more for some scale kits. Options are covered in large-scale RC boats for sale.
Safety
- Large boats can injure swimmers and damage other craft.
- Use failsafes that stop motors on signal loss.
- Have a recovery boat ready.
- Check local rules for large models on public water.
The long-distance yacht
The 2004 record crossing shows a different kind of “biggest”: a 2 m radio-controlled yacht sailed through the night across open sea from Imperia in Italy to Calvi in Corsica, covering 85.128 nautical miles in 23 hours 42 minutes. It needed a support boat, careful navigation and reliable radio gear, and it proved how capable model yachts can be in real sea conditions.
Seeing giant boats
Large RC boats appear at model boat shows, scale regattas and club open days, where builders run warships, tugs and liners on club lakes. These events are the best way to see big builds up close and talk to their builders about how they did it.
Many club giants are built as group projects over several winters, with members sharing the work.
