HPI Baja 5T: Specs, History and Buying One Today
The HPI Baja 5T is a 1/5 scale, gas-powered, two-wheel-drive desert truck released in 2008, built on the Baja 5B buggy platform with a truck body and bigger tyres. It uses a 26 cc Fuelie two-stroke engine with an 8,000 rpm clutch and high-flow muffler, is 900 mm long and weighs about 12.6 kg, and HPI rates it at over 40 mph with more than 30 minutes per tank. RTR versions were discontinued around 2019, with kit versions re-released in 2022, and countless used 5Ts and parts circulate today.

Why it’s popular
The Baja 5T brought the size and sound of 1/5 gas trucks to a wide audience. It’s big enough to drive over rough ground at speed, runs for a long time on cheap fuel, and has one of the largest aftermarket parts selections in large-scale RC. That support is why so many 5Ts are still running years after release, and why it’s a common base for big-bore engines, 4WD conversions and custom bodies.
Buying one today
- Check the engine: compression, starting, and no air leaks.
- Inspect the chassis plates and gear for cracks or bends.
- Look at the clutch, spur gear and pinion for wear.
- Check the steering servo and radio (old 27 MHz systems need replacing).
- Ask about modifications: big-bore engines and pipes need careful tuning.
- Compare with clone versions, which share many parts.
Common upgrades
- Stronger steering servo and servo saver.
- Larger carburettor such as the Walbro WT-1107 on modified engines.
- Tuned pipe and larger engines (with matching cooling and clutch).
- Aluminium suspension parts and stronger shock towers.
- Better air filtration to protect the engine.
Running tips
Mix fuel at the ratio the manual specifies, break in a new engine gently, clean and oil the air filter after every dusty session, and check screws after each run, since vibration loosens them. 5T vs 5B vs 5SC
The 5B is the buggy version with smaller tyres and a buggy body, generally a little lighter and quicker in corners. The 5T is the desert truck with larger tyres and a truck body. The 5SC is the short-course version with a different body and bumpers. They share most chassis parts, which makes swapping and repairs easy.
About clones
Several companies have made Baja-compatible trucks and parts, often called clones. They usually cost less and many parts interchange with genuine HPI parts, which keeps older trucks running. Quality varies: some clone parts are excellent, others are soft or poorly fitted. When buying used, ask whether the truck is a genuine HPI or a clone, and whether major parts have been mixed.
Where to run it
Open dirt, gravel pits with permission and desert-like areas suit the 5T best. Grass slows it down, and pavement wears tyres fast. Noise from a 26 cc engine carries, so stay away from homes.
