A380 RC Plane: Foam EDF Models, Giant Scale Builds and Flying an Airliner

RC Airplanes

The Airbus A380 is a favourite RC airliner subject. The most common ready-made version is an EPO foam model with a 1,520 mm (60 in) span, 1,397 mm length and four 55 mm EDF units, at about 1.87 kg flying weight, sold plug-and-fly. 3D-printable A380 files exist for builders, and some enthusiasts have built enormous one-off A380s, including a reported 29-foot, 800-pound giant. There are also cheap toy “A380” gliders with simple props that only resemble the shape.

Flying a four-engine airliner

An A380 model flies like a heavy jet: long take-off runs, gentle climbs, wide turns and long, flat approaches. Four small EDFs give a realistic sound, but they draw a lot of current and need careful balancing so all four produce equal thrust; a weak fan on one side causes yaw. The wide wing and big fuselage catch crosswinds on take-off and landing, so start on calm days with a long runway. EDF airliners usually fly for a few minutes per battery. Airliner flying is also covered in 737 RC plane.

Who it suits

  • Pilots who already fly low-wing sport planes and preferably an EDF jet.
  • Club members with a paved or smooth runway.
  • Airliner fans who value realism over aerobatics.

Setup tips

  1. Check each fan’s direction and thrust at full throttle.
  2. Balance precisely at the manual’s CG with the battery fitted.
  3. Use moderate rates and expo.
  4. Check that the landing gear is strong and straight; heavy airliners land hard.
  5. Set a conservative timer.

Giant A380 builds

Some builders have made huge A380 replicas with detailed cockpits, flaps, lights and landing gear. One widely reported build measured 29 feet long and weighed about 800 pounds. Projects like that take years, need special permission to fly in most countries and are as much engineering as modelling. More big airliners are in giant RC airliners.

Care

  • Inspect all four fans after each session.
  • Check wing joints and carbon spars for cracks.
  • Transport with the wings removed and the fuselage padded.
  • Keep spare landing gear and nose wheels.

Toy A380 gliders

Cheap “A380” planes on online marketplaces are usually small foam gliders with one or two props and a simple 2.4 GHz radio. They’re fun for kids in calm weather but bear little resemblance to a scale airliner in flight.

The real A380

The Airbus A380 is the largest passenger airliner ever built: a full-length double-deck aircraft with four engines, which first flew in 2005 and entered airline service in 2007. Production ended in 2021, but it remains a favourite with aviation fans, which is why it’s such a popular model subject. Its huge wing and four engine pods are what make it look right as a model, and also what make it more complex to build and fly than a twin-engine airliner.

Liveries

Foam A380 models usually come in one airline livery, often Emirates or a house scheme. Decal sets and paint let you change it, but keep the weight down and make sure paint is safe for foam. Many owners pick a livery from an airline they’ve flown with, which makes the model more personal.

FAQ

Is there an RC A380?
