Fastest RC Boats: Ready-to-Run Top Speeds Compared
The fastest ready-to-run electric RC boats you can buy today are 6S and 8S brushless catamarans and deep-V hulls rated at 50 to 70+ mph. At the top of the manufacturer ratings sits the Pro Boat Miss GEICO Zelos 36 Twin (70+ mph on 6S), followed by the Blackjack 42 8S (about 55 mph) and a group of 50 mph boats: Traxxas Spartan SR, Traxxas DCB M41 Widebody and Pro Boat Sonicwake 36. Below is the comparison table, what those numbers really mean on a lake, and which boat suits which water.

This article is part of the RC Boats guide. It covers ready-to-run (RTR) boats from the big hobby brands, because those are the ones with published speed ratings, spare parts and a manual. Home-built record boats are a different world and are not ranked here.
Which RC boats are the fastest? Top speeds compared
Ratings are the manufacturers’ or dealers’ published figures, checked November 2026. They are best-case numbers on flat water with fresh batteries and the recommended setup.
| Boat | Hull and length | Power | Rated top speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro Boat Miss GEICO Zelos 36 Twin (V2) | Catamaran, 36 in | Twin brushless, 6S LiPo recommended | 70+ mph (Horizon Hobby) |
| Pro Boat Blackjack 42 8S | Catamaran, 42 in | Spektrum Marine 4685 brushless, 8S LiPo | About 55 mph (dealer listings) |
| Traxxas Spartan SR | Deep-V, 36 in, self-righting | Velineon brushless, VXL-6s Marine, 2 × 3S LiPo | 50+ mph (Traxxas) |
| Traxxas DCB M41 Widebody | Catamaran, 40 in | Brushless, 2 × 3S LiPo (6S) | 50+ mph (Traxxas) |
| Pro Boat Sonicwake 36 | Deep-V, 36 in, self-righting | Brushless, up to 6S LiPo | 50+ mph (Horizon Hobby) |
| Pro Boat Zelos 48 Type G | Catamaran, 48 in | Zenoah G300PUM 30 cc gas engine | 50+ mph (Pro Boat) |
| Traxxas Blast (for comparison) | Deep-V, 24 in | Brushed, 7.2 V NiMH | About 10–20 mph (owner reports) |
The jump from the Blast at the bottom to the 50 mph group is the jump from a brushed toy-grade drive to a water-cooled brushless system on 6S. Our Traxxas Blast speed article shows what a starter boat does in practice.
What do the speed ratings really mean?
A “50+ mph” rating is a ceiling, not a cruising speed. It assumes a fully charged pack, the stock or recommended prop, calm water, little wind and a clean, dry hull. On a normal club pond you will see less, for four reasons:
- Chop: small waves force you off the throttle long before the boat runs out of power. Boats in this class spend more time airborne than accelerating on rough water.
- Voltage sag: speed drops as the LiPo pack discharges; the last third of a run is noticeably slower.
- Prop condition: a nicked or unbalanced prop costs speed and adds vibration. See how to balance an RC boat prop.
- Short straights: a 50 mph boat needs a long straight to reach that speed and room to turn after it.
Some ratings in the table come from the manufacturer, others only from dealer listings; the table says which. Treat dealer figures as a guide until you see the manufacturer’s spec sheet.
Catamaran or deep-V: which hull is faster?
On flat water the catamarans in the table are the fastest, because they ride on a cushion of air trapped between the two hulls and only a small part of the hull touches the water. A deep-V cuts through chop instead of skipping over it, so it keeps its speed better when the water is rough and is harder to flip.
| Hull | Best on | Strength | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Catamaran (Zelos, Blackjack, DCB M41) | Flat ponds, calm mornings | Highest top speed, stable in fast turns | Can blow over (flip backwards) in wind or chop; most are not self-righting |
| Deep-V mono (Spartan SR, Sonicwake) | Lakes with chop, windy days | Handles waves, self-righting on these models | Lower ceiling than a cat with the same power |
The full list of hull types, including riggers and hydros, is in the RC boat racing article.
Which fast RC boat should you buy?
- Highest rated speed, flat water: Pro Boat Miss GEICO Zelos 36 Twin. Two motors and a catamaran hull make it the fastest boat in the table, but it needs calm water and an experienced thumb.
- First 50 mph boat on a lake with waves: Traxxas Spartan SR or Pro Boat Sonicwake 36. Both are self-righting deep-Vs, so a flip in the middle of the lake does not end the day.
- Big, stable cat for open water: Pro Boat Blackjack 42 8S. Its size helps it in moderate chop, and 8S power gives it the second-highest rating in the table.
- Traxxas parts support with a cat hull: Traxxas DCB M41 Widebody.
- Long run times without batteries: Pro Boat Zelos 48 Type G. A tank of fuel replaces a bag of LiPos, at the cost of noise, fuel mixing and engine care. See gas-powered RC boats.
Are there fast RC boats on a budget?
Yes, within limits. Budget brushless boats in the 20–28 in range often reach 25–35 mph, which already feels very fast on a small pond. They save money on the hull and electronics, so seals, motor mounts and prop shafts wear sooner. What do batteries and upkeep cost?
Most 50 mph boats ship without batteries and charger. Two good 3S hard-case LiPo packs, a balance charger and a LiPo-safe bag can add a significant share of the boat’s price. Budget for spare props and a set of flex-cable grease too.
- Check the manual for the pack size that fits the hull and the connector the ESC uses.
- Charge only on a balance charger; see how to charge a LiPo battery.
- After every run: dry the hull, re-grease the flex cable, check the cooling lines are clear.
- Store LiPos at storage voltage, never full, between sessions.
Motor and ESC basics for boats are explained in RC boat motors.
How do you measure your boat’s real speed?
A small GPS speed logger or a GPS telemetry sensor (if your radio supports one) in the hull gives a real number. Run the same straight in both directions and average the two results to cancel out wind and current. Radar guns struggle with small boats at a distance, and phone apps on shore can’t measure the boat itself.
How do you run a 50 mph boat safely?
Warning: at 50 mph a 2–4 kg boat can injure a person and damage another boat badly. A spinning prop cuts fingers even on the bench.
- Only run where powered models are allowed; many parks ban them, and some lakes require a club membership.
- Never run near swimmers, anglers, wildlife or full-size boats.
- Keep the prop clear when the battery is connected; unplug before touching the drive.
- Have a retrieval plan: a retrieval boat, a fishing rod with a tennis ball, or a club rescue boat. Never swim after a model.
- Check the radio range and fail-safe before the first fast pass.
