MQ-9 Reaper RC Plane: Foam-Board Builds, Kits and FPV Models

RC Airplanes

The MQ-9 Reaper, a large military unmanned aircraft with a long straight wing, V-tail and pusher propeller, is a popular RC subject, especially for FPV flyers who like its “real drone” look. Most RC Reapers are home builds: foam-board and Depron plans around 2.5 m span (one design about 1.8 kg), smaller 42-inch pusher designs around 590 g, and 3D-printable versions. A 2.5 m fibreglass FPV model with pre-installed electronics, camera and video transmitter is also sold.

Why the Reaper

The Reaper’s long, efficient wing and pusher layout make it a natural FPV and long-flight platform: the camera in the nose has a clear view, and the slow, stable flight suits filming. Its recognisable shape makes it stand out at the field. Other FPV platforms are compared in best long-range FPV planes.

Building a foam-board Reaper

  1. Print the plans at the correct scale and transfer to foam board.
  2. Build the long wing with a carbon spar; it must be stiff.
  3. Build the fuselage box and the V-tail with a solid joint.
  4. Mount the pusher motor at the tail with good clearance from surfaces.
  5. Fit servos for ailerons and V-tail (mixed in the radio).
  6. Balance carefully; pushers are often tail-heavy.

Foam-board techniques are covered in foam-board planes.

Flying tips

  • Hand launch with a firm, level throw, or use a runway with gear.
  • Expect gentle, slow handling; the long wing turns smoothly.
  • Set V-tail mixing correctly before the first flight.
  • For FPV, fly with a spotter and within the rules.
  • Keep hands clear of the pusher prop when launching.

The real MQ-9

The full-size MQ-9 Reaper is a large remotely piloted aircraft used by several air forces. Its shape is distinctive: a slender fuselage, bulbous nose, long wing, downward V-tail and rear propeller. Models copy these features, though most RC versions simplify the tail and add landing gear or skid plates for practicality.

Rules

A 2.5 m model is a substantial aircraft. Check weight-based rules and registration in your country, and fly FPV only where permitted with a spotter.

Electronics

A foam-board Reaper typically uses a brushless motor sized for its weight with a pusher prop, a 30–40 A ESC, four servos (two ailerons and two for the V-tail), a receiver and a 3S–4S battery. For FPV, add a camera in the nose, a video transmitter with the antenna away from carbon, and ideally a flight controller with GPS return-to-home. Keep wiring tidy and away from the prop, since the motor sits close to the tail surfaces.

Launching a pusher

Hand launching a pusher plane needs care: hold it under the wing or by a launch grip, keep fingers well clear of the prop arc, and throw firmly and level. Some pilots use a bungee or have a helper launch.

FAQ

Can I buy an RC MQ-9 Reaper?

Some fibreglass FPV versions are sold; most are home builds.

How big is an RC Reaper?

Common designs span 42 in to 2.5 m.

Is it good for FPV?

Yes, the pusher layout gives a clear camera view.

Is it hard to build?

Foam-board versions are manageable for builders with some experience.
