How to Fly a UFO Drone: Controls, First Flights and Fixes

RC Drones

A UFO drone is a small quadcopter with a round, saucer-shaped body that protects the propellers. Flying one works like any toy drone: charge it, pair it with the remote (power the drone, then the remote, and move the left stick up and down), calibrate the gyro on a flat surface, then take off with the one-key button or gentle throttle. The left stick controls height and rotation; the right stick moves forward, back and sideways. The round shape means it has no obvious “front”, so headless mode is especially useful.

Controls

Control Action
Left stick up/down Climb/descend
Left stick left/right Rotate
Right stick up/down Forward/back
Right stick left/right Sideways
Headless button Controls relative to you, not the drone
One-key take-off/land Automatic take-off and landing
Speed button Change sensitivity

Typical layout; check your model’s manual.

First flight step by step

  1. Charge the battery fully.
  2. Switch on the drone on a flat surface, then the remote.
  3. Push the left stick up then down to pair; lights go solid.
  4. Calibrate the gyro (often both sticks to a corner); see your manual.
  5. Turn on headless mode if your drone has it, with the drone facing away from you.
  6. Take off to about 1 m and practise hovering.
  7. Make small movements and land gently.

Step-by-step manual instructions are in UFO quadcopter drone instructions.

Why headless mode helps

With a round UFO body, it’s hard to tell which way the drone faces. In headless mode, pushing the right stick forward always moves the drone away from you, regardless of its rotation. Set it up with the drone facing away from you when you activate it. Turn headless off once you can track orientation using the LED lights.

Indoor and outdoor flying

UFO drones are ideal indoors because their guards protect walls and furniture. Clear a room, turn off fans, and fly at low speed. Outdoors, only fly in calm weather; light drones drift quickly in wind. Keep the drone close and in sight. General beginner tips are in how to fly a mini drone for beginners.

Common problems

  • Drifts: recalibrate on a level surface, then trim.
  • Won’t take off: battery low or props installed in the wrong positions.
  • Flips on take-off: props swapped; match A/B props to their motors.
  • Won’t pair: power the drone first, then the remote, then move the left stick.
  • Short flights: battery ageing; buy spares.

Tricks

Many UFO drones have a flip button: press it, then push the right stick in a direction. Do flips at least 2 m high with a full battery. Some models also offer circle flight or gravity mode. Practise basic control first; tricks are easy, control is the real skill.

Battery tips

UFO drones use small LiPo batteries that give a few minutes of flight. Land when the lights flash for low battery; running a LiPo completely flat shortens its life and can make the drone drop suddenly. Let the battery cool before charging, use the supplied USB cable and charge under supervision. Buying two or three spare batteries makes sessions much longer and lets each battery rest between flights.

Flying with kids

The guarded body makes UFO drones good first drones for children. Supervise flights, keep the drone away from faces and pets, and set simple rules such as landing before walking over to the drone.

FAQ

How do I fly a UFO drone?

Pair, calibrate, then use the left stick for height and turning, right for direction.

Why does my UFO drone drift?

It needs gyro calibration or trim.

Is headless mode necessary?

Very helpful on round drones without a clear front.

Can UFO drones fly outside?

Only in calm weather.
